Rev. Cathy Merchant
Founder, Living Interfaith Sanctuary
Vancouver, BC, Canada
Founder of the Living Interfaith Sanctuary in Vancouver — a spiritually inclusive community that honors all faith traditions and the wisdom they carry. Leads services and gatherings that integrate teachings from diverse spiritual paths including Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Indigenous traditions, and more.
Living Interfaith Sanctuary’s mission is “We share who we are and celebrate our diversity, not to convert or convince, but in realization of our common humanity. That we are called by our common humanity to act with love, compassion, and respect in the world, always remembering that we are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers.”
She facilitates dialogue circles in Vancouver aimed at fostering trust, humility, and bridge-building between individuals of different beliefs, cultures, or life experiences.
She is also a Minister of Community Life at Canadian Memorial United Church, where she supports spiritual growth, pastoral care, and the design of inclusive liturgies and rituals.
Rooted in Mahayana Buddhism and ordained as an interfaith minister, Cathy lives her spiritual life in an interspiritual household—her family practices Ismaili Islam.
