Istituto Universitario Sophia is an expression of the Focolare Movement founded in 1943 by Chiara Lubich in Trent, Italy, during the Second World War. It promotes unity and universal brotherhood. Rooted in Catholicism while embracing interfaith and secular dialogue, its key principles include love, dialogue, and solidarity, inspired by Jesus’ prayer for unity. Besides community living and peacebuilding efforts, it has encouraged the so-called “Economy of Communion” since 1991. This model is a more just and inclusive economic system where businesses operate with ethical principles and share profits in three ways: reducing poverty and inequality, creating more jobs and sustainable growth, and spreading a culture of giving. Its initiatives span ecumenical, interreligious, and cultural fields. The movement operates in 182 countries, with about 2 million followers worldwide.
